چکیده

We consider a BitTorrent type file sharing algorithm with randomized chunk copying process. The system functions in completely distributed way without any ’Tracker’, just relying on randomness. In such case the stability becomes an issue. It may happen, say, that some chunk becomes rare. This problem can persist and cause accumulation of peers in the system, resulting in unstable system. The considered algorithms result in processes similar to urn-processes. The rare chunk phenomenon corresponds to Polya-urn type process, where common chunks are favored. However, some urnprocesses like the Friedman-urn can provide good balance by favoring rare chunks in copying process. Recently, we showed that an algorithm based on Friedman-urn is efficient in two chunk case. We generalize this algorithm for the more realistic case of many chunks. It shows good performance in terms of balance of chunks in an open system with constant flow of incoming peers. Further, the system is able to cope with instances like ’flash crowd’, with large burst of incoming peers. The open system can also quickly reach equilibrium after an initial imbalance, when the system starts from a state with one rare chunk. We constructed a simplified model, assuming a good balance of chunks, and get results surprisingly close to simulations for Friedman-urn based random process. P2P Network Trust Management Survey

Peer-to-peer applications (P2P) are no longer limited to home users, and start being accepted in academic and corporate environments. While file sharing and instant messaging applications are the most traditional examples, they are no longer the only ones benefiting from the potential advantages of P2P networks. For example, network file storage, data transmission, distributed computing, and co...

Optimization of Peer to Peer Content Based File Sharing System in Disconnected Manets

Current peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing methods in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) can be classified into three groups: floodingbased, advertisement-based, and social contact-based. The first two groups of methods can easily have high overhead and low scalability. They are mainly developed for connected MANETs, in which end-to-end connectivity among nodes is ensured. The third group of methods ...

On the expected file download time of the random time-based switching algorithm in P2P networks

The expected file download time of the random time-based switching algorithm for peer selection and file downloading in a peer-to-peer (P2P) network is still unknown. The main contribution of this paper is to analyze the expected file download time of the time-based switching algorithm for file sharing in P2P networks when the service capacity of a source peer is totally correlated over time, n...

Stable, scalable, decentralized P2P file sharing with non-altruistic peers

P2P systems provide a scalable solution for distributing large files in a network. The file is split into many chunks, and peers contact other peers to collect missing chunks to eventually complete the entire file. The so-called ‘rare chunk’ phenomenon, where a single chunk becomes rare and prevents peers from completing the file, is a threat to the stability of such systems. Practical systems ...

Probing High-Capacity Peers to Reduce Download times in P2P File Sharing Systems with Stochastic Service Capacities

The main problem for an individual user peer in a peer-to-peer network with heterogeneous source peers is the peer selection problem, namely, switching among source peers and finally settling on one, while keeping the total time of probing and downloading to a minimum. There has been little investigation on selecting source peers with stochastic service capacities. The main contribution of this...
